What is the new FTC guideline released in 2010?

The new FTC guideline released in 2010 is an effort on the part of the FTC to bring a greater awareness to principles that have been in place for many years. Due to the fact the Internet has made it possible for anyone to be an international advertiser, and with growing complaints to the FTC, the FTC has expanded their definitions in an effort to reduce complaints.

The FTC Act is very general. It prohibits deceptive and unfair acts or practices in commerce and misleading advertising of drugs, foods, cosmetics, devices and services. These prohibitions apply both offline and online and have been applied to Internet websites and SPAM and other forms of marketing for over a decade. The guidelines issued in 2010, given that general language, they're really intended to provide additional guidance on how these prohibitions apply to online marketers, bloggers and affiliates. The purpose was really to provide information to businesses to allow them to voluntarily comply with the FTC Act.

Bottom line you should never mislead people by misrepresenting products or services, always tell the truth, if you are receiving financial gain from the what you are promoting you need to disclose that.
